Forget That Advertisement For Mercedes-Benz, Mario Kart 8 Is Finally Getting An On-Screen Map

Rejoice, Mario Kart 8 fans, the first big update is finally on its way. This latest Mario Kart iteration was not quite the savior Nintendo probably wanted it to be (and it did not save the company from posting $97m losses last quarter), but it’s been extremely popular among critics and Wii U owners and it still has a big online player base. With this newest update it adds something racers have been clamoring for as well as a few new karts.

mapppppWhile the big headliner for the update has been the three new (and free) Mercedes-Benz karts – the GLA, W25 Silver Arrow, and the 300 SL Roaders – the update I and most Mario Kart 8 players will be most excited for is the on-screen map. As it is currently, the only way to see any kind of map is to look down at your gamepad or try and hold it up for a quick glance while dodging banana peels and trying to catch that one racer from Spain that has won every single race in your online lobby.

Not only will this update stop you from having to sacrifice precious milliseconds of focus to look down, it will give any players who wish to play without a gamepad and friends on the couch the chance to have a map to view as well, ending the argument about the player using the gamepad having a big advantage of the map and list of player items.

No word yet on any other kind of DLC such as new racers or karts, but this first major update hits Japan and U.S. Wii U owners August 27th.
