Rocket Raccoon has topped the comic book sales charts for July, as reported by Diamond Comics Distributors. Alongside the breakout Guardians of the Galaxy star, Marvel also boasted three of the other top five comics in the bestseller list with Original Sin, Amazing Spider-Man, and Spider-Man 2099 rounding out the top five alongside Rocket Raccoon and DC Comic’s Batman. Rocket’s big screen co-star Star-Lord also appeared in the top ten list with the Samuel Ryan Humphries-penned Legendary Star-Lord beating out Harley Quinn for the ninth spot.
The already popular series is being written and drawn by the fantastic Skottie Young and primarily focuses on Rocket on the run after being framed for murder. In it’s inaugural issue that topped the charts it sold nearly 300,000 copies, presumably getting a big boost from Guardians of the Galaxy hype as well as being featured as part of free comic book day back in May.
Of the estimated $53 million worth of product purchased in July, Marvel lead the way with 35% of the share and DC Comics in a close second with 28%. Image Comics, the publishers behind The Walking Dead graphic novel, ended up in a distant third with 9%.
Also interesting to note is that another Guardians of the Galaxy property topped the game sales charts. The HeroClix booster packs for Guardians outsold even Magic: The Gathering M15 booster packs during July. For all intents and purposes the Guardians franchise is absolutely on fire right now with no signs of slowing down anytime soon. I’ll be curious to see how much the sales figures grow for all the associated comics in August after more fans see the movie and go out to read more about their favorite group of a-holes.
