It’s Finally Happening – Ant-Man Begins Filming Today

After several iterations, directors, leading actors, almost being a Pixar animated film, and nearly a decade of rumors, Marvel’s Ant-Man is finally set to begin filming today. The embattled Marvel hero will mark the twelfth superhero to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe when the movie releases in July of next year and stars comedian Paul Rudd as con-man-turned-superhero Scott Lang.

Fair warning, there are some minor comic and maybe movie spoilers ahead.

We actually know about the plot so far that it is thin, but we know it does not follow the exploits of the original Ant-Man, Hank Pym, but instead is focused on his protege Scott Lang. In the comics, Lang comes into the Ant-Man powers when he attempts to save his daughter Cassandra’s life by stealing the power and robbing banks to pay for her medical bills. The 69-year-old Michael Douglas will play Hank Pym; it’s a safe bet that the movie will either not be an origin story or will have the origin altered to involve Hank Pym much less in the origin of Ant-Man.

HOW TO: Change system date in OS X ...

No other Marvel Superhero cameos are confirmed but, being that Hank Pym invented the main villain of Avengers: Age of Ultron, we may see or at least hear some mentions of the earth’s mightiest heroes.

It’s not bad, I promise.

Director Peyton Reed has stated that Ant-Man will have a comedic tone, which is supported by the fact that the film stars comedian Paul Rudd. Reed himself has a directing background rooted in comedies with films such as Down With Love, Yes Man, The Break-Up, and Bring It On. A director with such a deep history of romantic comedies piloting the film of your favorite superhero might be worrying, but, honestly, Down With Love and even Bring It On were not terrible movies by any stretch.

Personally, I’m curious to see if a comedian such as Paul Rudd can carry a superhero movie. Hollywood is trying everything it can to shove fellow comedic actor Ryan Reynolds into tights, but his roles have been flat at best. Striking out with the Green Lantern and suffering from a terrible script during his appearance as Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Seriously, how do you have Deadpool in a movie and force him not to talk? Shame on you, FOX.

Why? WHY?!
Why? WHY?!

We’re never going to know what Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man would have looked like, and it’s time to look past that and look forward to what Reed and Adam McKay can do with his script, for better or worse. Pending another catastrophic change (and we honestly can’t rule anything out when it comes to Ant-Man anymore), the movie is set to debut in theaters on July 17, 2015.
