With the passing of Robin Williams last week, gaming fans of both World of Warcraft and Zelda alike petitioned Blizzard and Nintendo respectively to include a Robin Williams non-playable tribute character (NPC) in a future update or game. While Blizzard has responded favorably to fans, Nintendo says it has no plans to discuss if there will be a future Robin Williams Zelda tribute.
As is widely known by now, Williams was an avid player of video games, and both World of Warcraft and the Zelda franchise neared the top of his list – Williams even named his daughter Zelda and appeared in a commercial for The Legend of Zelda. Nick Shaedel, of Australia, penned the petition – which currently has over 110,000 signatures – at Change.org asking Nintendo to:
Please consider naming an NPC in the new Legend of Zelda game after Robin Williams. It was a series he loved, and it’s a small tribute to a great man.
According to Polygon, Nintendo’s response to the petition included the following quote:
“Robin Williams was loved at Nintendo.” offered a Nintendo spokesperson. “Our hearts go out to his entire family, and especially to Zelda Williams who we’ve worked with multiple times.
“We appreciate the outpouring of support from the gaming community, and hear the request of fans to honor him in a future game. We will not be discussing what might be possible for future games during this difficult time, but we will hold our memories of Robin close.”
At this point, only time will tell whether or not Nintendo will include an NPC based on the petitions request. Perhaps their initial response will only fuel more signatures to the petition.
