Box Office Breakdown: The Guardians Take The Win For Summer Supremacy!

|

As we come to close out the Summer 2014 season at the movies this week, the last week before Labor Day,  it looks like the Guardians of the Galaxy are going to take the crown for this summers biggest hit.  This weekend, the Marvel flick brought in $1.6 million winning this weekends box office and pushing the film just shy – at 251 million –  of passing the biggest movie of the year so far with fellow Marvel film Captain America: The Winter Soldier.  Guardians was also able to hold off stiff competition from new comers like If I Stay and this month’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles who finished 3rd and 2nd respectively. Rounding out the top 5 were Let’s Be Cops in fourth and When the Game Stands Tall in fifth.

The Expendables 3 fell off a staggering 58 percent from the previous week and The Giver (starring Jeff Bridges) slid down 45%.  To give that context, Guardians of the Galaxy (even having been released nearly a full month ago) only fell off 30% from the previous week.  Even more surprising was Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill Fors very disappointing 6.48 million take for the weekend. It was thought that comic book enthusiasts would give it a solid boost. The sequel to the successful Sin City adapted from the graphic novels of Frank Miller instead debuted in 8th place.

So the real story here though is that as the dust settles over the summer movie shootout, it looks like the gamble has paid off huge for both Marvel Studios, Disney, and director James Gunn.  Riding a surge of both popular and critically positive response, Guardians of the Galaxy with it’s humor, action, and wicked awesome soundtrack have indeed won over the hearts of America apparently and given it a win. If you were to speculate just how critics and reviewers felt, you could say they would argue that the good guys won after the mostly negative response to well established franchises like Transformers and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I expect there will be a renewed surge of marketing as we head into the Labor Day holiday weekend urging people to see Star Lord and the rest of the deviants in action again. After all, some would say that it’s movies like Guardians which remind us of just how fun the movies can be again.
