Batman has nothing on Superman today, as “Action Comics” No. 1 issue, which featured the first ever appearance of Superman, originally released in 1938 for just 10 cents, just sold on an e-bay auction netting the seller, Darren Adams, $3,207,852.
It is reported to be the highest price ever paid for a comic book, and supposedly is one of the less than 100 copies left of the original print. With only one other copy in 9.0 out of 10 condition, according to the Certified Guaranty Company (CGC), an independent authority that grades comic books submitted for auction, Adams touted that “this copy blows the other 9.0 out of the water.” The other copy ended up selling for a paltry $2.16 million dollars in 2011.
According to Adams, the original owner bought the copy hot off the newsstands in 1938 and kept it in a cedar chest in his high altitude home in West Virginia. After he passed, Adams acquired the comic book for a seven figure sum and held on to it for several years before turning to his e-bay auction.
As part of deal struck between Adams and E-bay, one percent of the proceeds, or $32,078.52, will go to the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, a charity dedicated to reasearch and care of spinal cord injuries in memory of the famous actor, Christopher Reeve, who famously portrayed Superman on the big screen spanning from 1978 to 1988 (as well as made a few appearances on the Superman prequel TV series Smallville).
The original creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, were teenagers when they drew up Superman in 1933 but they ended up selling the rights to DC Comics for just $130, receiving only $10 for each page they drew. If only they had known how much their creation would take off.
