Nintendo has just announced two new models of the Nintendo 3DS handheld gaming console. The New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS LL (XL in other regions) are both coming to Japan on October 11. Nintendo has said that no new 3DS consoles will be coming to North America or Europe at this time, though we can be hopeful for a 2015 release of the new models for other countries.

Although it’s not a massive revision, the overall design and quality of the hardware appears to have been refreshed. Chief among the hardware features of the New Nintendo 3DS models are as follows:

A new C -stick for greater camera control has been added just above the familiar A/B/X/Y buttons. There are also secondary trigger buttons now, ZR and ZL, which will bring additional gameplay elements as games are released or updated to take advantage of the buttons. The Start and Select buttons have been moved to the right hand side of the device, while the Home button remains at the center, underneath the secondary screen.

Faster processor speed and a better battery life will allow for better overall system performance, especially with the incoming firmware update that will allow gamers to set custom themes and backgrounds on their Nintendo 3DS. Removable backings and a microSD card slot are also welcome changes to the system hardware.

Nintendo has also added a Near Field Communication (NFC) chip to the New 3DS. Mobile gamers will now be able to take advantage of the new Amiibo toys. It’ll be interesting to be able to add characters and power ups to Nintendo 3DS games via this new NFC addition to the secondary screen.

The New 3DS screen is also bigger, and will also have improved 3D that allows players to view the 3D effect at a greater variety of angles. This is something that will greatly improve the usability of the 3D function on the 3DS. Before, players would have to sit quite still when using the 3D feature, but now they will have a little more leniency with movement when playing their favorite 3DS games in 3D.

What do you think about the New Nintendo 3DS models? Will you be picking one up as soon as they are released in your country? Let us know in the comments below, on Google+, Facebook, or Twitter!
