Guillermo del Toro Wants To See The Horrors You Can Unleash

|

Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, Blade 2) announced today that he’s hooking up with YouTube to inspire people to write and direct their own short horror films. Del Toro is of course becoming one of the premier names in dark fantasy/horror genre for his prolific work in Pan’s Labyrinth and rolling off his surprisingly successful Pacific Rim. Legendary Pictures is teaming up with del Toro for a contest that is seeking new blood in horror film making.

Del Toro will choose from concepts submitted and choose a handful of potential winners. He’ll then provide guidance through the entire film making process to create short horror films. Starting Sept 22nd, users with over 10,000 subscribers to their channel will have access to professional production facilities via YouTube: Spaces to create their vision. The short horror films will then stream on YouTube via the channels and a winner will be chosen from those entries with the winner receiving an actual film deal with Legendary Pictures!

HOW TO: Change system date in OS X ...

Submissions have to be done by October 27th which is  just in time for Halloween.

A similar contest was held for Godzilla where 29 channels filmed scenes using props from the movie. The timing isn’t coincidental. Legendary and del Toro are gearing up their promotion of his gothic romance Crimson Peak coming out in October of 2015 that will star Tom Hiddleston (Thor, The Avengers), Charlie Hunnam (from Sons of Anarchy), Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) and Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland). With Crimson Peak, del Toro will try to stake his claim as the new ambassador of the horror genre with his first full on horror movie. About the genre, Guillermo explains:

I think [horror] is one of the essential genres of cinema….the genre defines who we are very much like humor does. Horror and humor are closely related in that they are very, very personal.

Be sure to keep an eye out via YouTube for the submissions and maybe you’ll see that short film become a full on movie in the future.
