Welcome to The Playlist! This is the weekly column, out every Friday, that lets you know what video games the MOARGeek staff is playing. If a title interests you, click on one of the images under the corresponding Download header and game your heart out!

Now, enough dilly-dallying – let’s take a look at this week’s Playlist!

The Bureau – XCOM Declassified – Third Person Shooter

Somewhat widely criticized for using the XCOM name and faulted for what it isn’t, The Bureau – XCOM Declassified is actually nowhere near as bad as some people would have you believe. There are plenty of XCOM staples that are missing from this game – research tree, random missions, etc. but for what the developers were going for, it really does work (and really, who needs to research how an alien gun works before just trying to shoot it?). This is a 3rd person tactical shooter with some minor RPG elements and excellent graphics/environments. 2K really did a good job of creating a real-time game with a very turn-based-tactics kind of feel. I picked this up pretty cheap during a Steam sale, and I don’t regret doing so. I’ve had fun with this game so far, even when I get frustrated with the honestly very robust enemy AI.

Destiny – Shared World MMO Shooter

As expected, a number of us have been putting most of our gaming time into Destiny – Bungie’s new shared world MMO shooter. I found the story pretty quick to go through, and a bit light, but am looking forward to the DLC and future releases to fully flesh out the rest of the story. Since I’ve hit level 20, I’ve been partaking in the Vanguard Strikes and public events in order to get my Light levels. The addition of the Queen’s Bounties this week was a welcome addition, as well as discovering the Loot Cave (which has since been patched – but fear not, a new one has been found). Too many late nights have been had since Destiny hit my Xbox One.

Hyrule Warriors – Action RPG

While the rest of the lovely MOARGeek staffers have been playing Destiny, I’ve been twiddling my thumbs and staring menacingly at my Wii U waiting for Hyrule Warriors to finally come out. Picked it up today and plan on playing it until my eyes bleed or my children need food or something, whichever comes first. Expect a MOARGeek review sometimes next week!

Star Wars: Commander – Strategy

Star Wars: Commander was originally released on iOS, and has recently made its way to Android. It’s a slow-paced game that’s about creating a base that can withstand incoming attacks, but also launch devastating sieges either in story mode or, when you’re ready to face real opponents, in PVP mode. You can side with either the Rebellion of the Empire and lay waste to threats using any number of vehicles, vessels, and units. Personally, I prefer the slower pace of this game, as I don’t have a lot of time to dedicate to it. I love that I can set my Droids to upgrading my defenses or start creating a unit of Wookie fighters and walk away from the game for a while. This game is definitely based on a traditional free-to-play model, though. Be prepared to wait a long time for upgrades to buildings and units if you don’t want to pay-to-play.

Destiny – Shared World MMO Shooter

Destiny is scratching an itch for me that no other game has in a long time and that’s my World of Warcraft itch. Destiny‘s end game of grinding and random loot drops feels like coming home to a pot of your momma’s chicken and dumplin’s (I’m from the Southern United States so that’s a thing…trust me). Destiny‘s reviews have been less than kind regarding the story but there are hidden clues that the launch game will look nothing like itself before Bungie is done with it. Want proof? Check our your grimoire cards and hit up location. Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn… the game is only beginning and I am REALLY loving the ride.

Destiny – Shared World MMO Shooter

Destiny has really brought me back to my glorious Halo days – staying up all night at a friend’s house with 15 other people, four tube TV’s of varying size separated sheets hap-hazardly hung from the ceiling, swipe-sniping, pistol whipping, horrible avatar names and even worse trash talking. Except now it’s an online party instead of a LAN party and Fireteam Ginger Bunny only has two awesome members (and we always get matched up with some schlub that does half the strike and leaves us on the boss fight). The soundtrack is just as good, if not better, and you know you’re about to get into the thick of things when you notice your heart is racing as the bass kicks in. Being an established Peter Dinklage fan-girl, having his voice accompany you throughout the game has only further elevated my already amazing experience with the game. I’m still trying to find a suitable notification/ringtone of Ghost for my phone. Let me know if you have one! I NEED IT!
