Angry Birds Not Messing Around, Several Big Names Linked To The 2016 Film

Just in case you thought the news of a Tetris movie was not insane enough, several sources are reporting the cast of the upcoming Angry Birds movie and it is loaded with star power. The cast consisting of Jason Sudekis, Bill Hader, Peter Dinklage, and Maya Rudolph was revealed by producer John Cohen in an email to news outlets.

And the big names don’t stop there either. The complete list also includes the likes of Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Ike Barinholtz, Hannibal Burress, Keegan Michael-Key, the mega popular YouTube duo Smosh (Ian Andrew Hecox and Anthony Padilla), and many others.

Directing this loaded cast will be Fergal Reilly and Clay Kaytis – both of whom have no prior directorial experience but plenty of experience behind-the-scenes on animation and film projects. Reilly was a storyboard artist on great classics such as The Iron Giant, Space Jam, and Osmosis Jones, as well as 2003’s The Haunted Mansion (but we can always forgive him for that one). Kaytis, on the other hand, is a Disney veteran having done animation work on Disney Animation Studios films such as Frozen and Wreck-it-Ralph.

Before claiming that Angry Birds will be the animation equivalent of Citizen Kane, it is important to remember that a bunch of big names does not automatically mean the film will succeed. Remember 2003’s atrocity FoodfightWhile that film had numerous other problems that contributed to its less than stellar quality, it also had a $65 million budget and a huge star-powered cast with Hillary Duff, Wayne Brady, Christopher Lloyd,  Charlie Sheen, and Eva Longoria voicing the terribly written and animated characters. I am in no way saying that Angry Birds is destined to flop as hard as that, but a big list of names on a poster doesn’t mean much. And lest we forget forget Peter Dinklage’s now infamous line during the Destiny alpha testing, “that wizard came from the moon.”

Angry Birds is being produced by John Cohen (Despicable Me) and is set to release July 1, 2016.
