Universal Pictures let loose some details about the upcoming Coen Brothers comedy in a press release earlier in the week. After their critically successful drama Inside Llweyn Davis last year, the director/writer/producer duo are heading back to their comedy roots with their next film, Hail, Caesar.
As with every Coen Brothers movie, speculation has been rampant and mostly incorrect – but this official word from Universal gives us our first glimpse into what the film will entail, and it’s pretty exciting.
Featuring a star studded cast of George Clooney, Josh Brolin, Scarlet Johannsen, Tilda Swinton, Channing Tatum, and more – the film will follow the life of a “fixer” (someone who follows around movie stars and cleans up their messes/controversies) in late 1950’s Hollywood. Clooney has become a staple in Coen Brothers’ comedies at this point, and it’s nice to see him being cast in Hail, Caesar as well. In general, he has an “old Hollywood” feel to him to start with, so I’m sure he’ll slide right into this film perfectly as he did in other Coen Brother’s films O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Burn After Reading.
Not much was revealed about the plot other than it follows a Hollywood fixer who has things to fix, naturally. That alone leaves it open to almost anything, especially when left to the creativity of the Coen Brothers’ writing.
The film is set to release on February 5th, 2016 – hopefully bucking the trend of Hollywood’s worst movies being released in the earlier months of the year.
