The worst kept secret in cinema has finally been confirmed, as Fox announced that Ryan Reynolds would be returning to play Deadpool in the 2016 film of the same name. Ever since the character was dragged through the mud in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, fans have been waiting for a real Deadpool movie, and it has always been assumed that Reynolds would be playing everyone’s favorite merc with a mouth.
We got our first taste of Ryan Reynolds as the real Deadpool in a short proof-of-concept teaser that was shown to fans during last year’s San Diego Comic Con and naturally leaked online shortly after. While we may never know the exact timeline of events, that teaser was allegedly made before the Deadpool movie was even a surefire thing, but that excellent leaked footage led to the internet rallying around director Tim Miller to get it done. It was finally confirmed in October that the movie was coming and rumors of Reynolds remaining as Deadpool began to ignite again.
He did play another comic book super hero since X-Men, when he starred in The Green Lantern, but it too was plagued by shoddy writing and Reynolds’ style just didn’t gel all that well with the lawful do-gooder Hal Jordan. Making the jump from a sub-par superhero movie – or two of them in Reynold’s case – to a more successful one is not that far fetched either. The majority of the world has hopefully blocked 2005’s The Fantastic 4 film out of their minds so they might not remember, but Captain America himself, Chis Evans, once played the part of Johnny Storm before making the jump to The Avengers.
Virtually nothing about the upcoming film is known at this time, other than the staff, Ryan Reynolds, and the fact that it will be rated PG-13 (which is not the end of the world), but everyone involved have declared numerous times their love for the Marvel antihero, so it should be in good hands. If there is any justice in the world, X-Men Origins: Wolverine will be retconned and Deadpool will be allowed to start his onscreen persona over from scratch.
