Ok, so maybe it’s not quite that dramatic, but for the third weekend in a row The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 topped the box office by a wide margin. Once again, the next biggest money maker was Fox’s Penguins of Madagascar bringing in $11.1 million and, for those keeping track, that is a little over $10 million shy of The Hunger Games’ $21.6 million gross.
Horrible Bosses 2 jumped a few spots from last week, up from three to five, with its $8.6 million weekend. Despite mixed to negative reviews, the comedy continues to flourish in an otherwise comedy-barren theater scene. Right now if you want to go to a theater and laugh at something your only options are Horrible Bosses 2, Dumb and Dumber To, or just stabbing yourself in the eye with a pencil.
The top five is rounded out by Big Hero 6 bringing in $8.1 million, and Interstellar conquering the number five spot with love and $8.0 million.
Nightcrawler got a nice boost after opening in 687 more theaters over the weekend, grossing $1.1 million. That 27% increase over last week’s earnings make it one of the best week-over-week improvements in an otherwise slow weekend at the box office.
All told, only five films – Keep On Keepin’ On, The Homesman, The Babadook, Boyhood, and Nightcrawler – experienced positive changes compared to last week. Combined, all films grossed 53.5% less than last weekend.
This week’s big winner in the per-theater average department was The Imitation Game. Despite only running in 8 theaters and suffering a 16.1% dip from last weekends revenue, the film still grossed an impressive $402,000 – or $50,250 per theater. One of the few debuts this weekend, Wild starring Reese Witherspoon, also had a decent average. The Jean-Marc Vallee film brought $630,000 in only 21 theaters, for a $30,000 average.
Last year at this time, Disney ruled the day with Frozen topping the charts and grossing $31.6 million followed closely by Lionsgate and the The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and its $26.2. Other than those two, nothing else even made above $6 million – the closest being Out of the Furnance, which debuted to the tune of $5.2 million. Overall though, this weekend in 2013 made almost $20 million more than in 2014.
