Star Wars #1 Will Sell More Than One Million Copies When It Releases Next Month

When Star Wars #1 releases next month it will sell well over one million copies, according to Marvel’s Senior Vice President of Sales, David Gabriel. Initially reported by ComicBook.com, the inaugural issue of Star Wars’ return to comic book form will become the “top-selling single issue of the past 20 years.” This would knock off the current leader in that category, Amazing Spider-Man #583, which featured President Barack Obama and released just months after he was elected president in 2009.

As Gabriel told ComicBook.com in an exclusive interview, the biggest factor in the book’s massive sales is the powerful Star Wars brand.

Biggest factor I’d have to say is the strength of the Star Wars brand and the excitement that the Lucas folks have been able to create for the franchise. Though the folks behind the scenes have been working on the title for over a year, we’ve only been working for about two months selling issue one (and I’ve had great help from John Paretti, George Beliard, and of course Jordan D. White along with the Lucas folks). But it’s been one of the easiest sells in a long time, and that’s a testament to the Star Wars brand.

Gabriel also attributes a lot of the Star Wars comic’s sales on the variety of ways that Marvel and LucasFilms are promoting the comic and film respectively, which is a great point. The fact that Disney owns both Marvel and Star Wars allows an amazing amount of cross-promotion with very little red tape around it. They have done a great job utilizing the internet and promotion services such as LootCrate, as well as promoting the issue’s various alternate covers across the internet.

HOW TO: Change system date in OS X ...

The Star Wars comic series will take place in the time between the original Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back which, as far as the non-movie Star Wars universe goes, is relatively unexplored territory. Artwork will be handled by John Cassaday, the story will be penned by Jason Aaron, and the first record-breaking issue is due to be released on January 14th, 2015.
