Live-Action Ghost In The Shell Lands Scarlett Johansson For Lead Role

|

Normally it’s an actor or actress that lands the role in a film, but in the case of Scarlett Johansson signing on for the live-action Ghost in the Shell adaptation it may be a case of the film landing the actress. Fresh off of blockbusters Lucy and The Avengers in 2014, Johansson is set to star in the Dreamworks vision of the popular anime that has its roots all the way back in 1989 when the Ghost in the Shell manga was published by Kodansha.
With the exception of maybe Jennifer Lawrence, it’s hard to argue that any actress is as big in pop culture as Scarlett Johansson heading into 2015. Not only did she star in the aforementioned blockbusters The Avengers and Lucy, she has also recently starred in Her, Chef, and Under The Skin. All films that don’t attract as many big numbers as her appearances as Black Widow in Marvel films, but she turned in fantastic performances in each one of them.
Not to say that a live Ghost in the Shell would not have a chance at succeeding with other rumored lead actresses (including Margot Robbie), but landing one of the biggest names in Hollywood should help the adaptation soar in a mainstream American audience that might not be familiar with the source material. There is also plenty of said source material that director Rupert Sanders and writer William Wheeler have to choose from when it comes to the film, with decades worth of stories available to them begging to be made into a feature length film.
As well as now being slated for Ghost in the Shell, Scarlett Johansson is set to star in the next Avengers film, Age of Ultron, supply the voice of Kaa in The Jungle Book, and she has a leading role in the Coen brothers next project, Hail, Ceasar!. Ghost in the Shell itself is in still in early pre-production with no solid release date set.
