Fans of Broadway rejoice! According to an interview with producer Marc Platt, a movie adaption of the popular and award winning musical Wicked is in the process of being developed. The musical, which opened on Broadway in 2003 and has been performed all over Europe and Australia, has charmed audiences all over the world as it explores the origins of the so-called ‘Wicked Witch of the West.”
Winnie Holzman, who write the booklet for the musical, is working on the script now, according to Platt. Stephen Daldry, is set to direct. While the movie is listed as being released in 2016, Platt warns fans not to be too impatient, stating,
…We are intending to move forward on the movie but aren’t going to do so until we’re satisfied in the material we have as a screenplay
Having seen so many movie adaptations be ruined by rushed productions schedules, it’s reassuring to know that Platt is willing to take his time. Given that the script is still being worked on, there’s no information on who will being playing whom yet.
Wicked is loosely based a book by the same title by Gregory MacGuire. It was adapted to the stage by Stephen Schwartz and is now entering its 12th straight year on Broadway.
