Students Across The U.S. Can See Selma For Free

|

Thanks to a collaborative effort from several African-American business leaders and non-profit organizations, 275,000 students across the US can see the Oscar-nominated Selma free of charge. Available in select cities, middle and high school students who present their student ID or a report card at a participating movie theater will get in for free.

The movement to get a large number of America’s youth a chance to watch the Martin Luther King Jr. biopic sprung out of New York City when 27 business leaders paid up front for 27,000 tickets to allow 7th, 8th, and 9th graders to see the film for free. Those tickets sold out almost immediately. From there, the movement – dubbed Selma For Students – has expanded across over two dozen cities, mostly along the east coast, but also in larger cities such as Chicago, Dallas, and Los Angeles.
Students who attend the free showings are encouraged to share images and their thoughts on the film using the hashtag #SelmaForStudents. Ticket availability and age requirements vary by state, so be sure to check on the official website, and call your local theaters for more information.
Selma for Students started last Thursday, but with Martin Luther King Day happening now in the US and many students having the day off of school, there is a surge of young movie goers making their way to watch.
Selma is nominated for an Oscar for best picture, but many feel the film has been slighted with no Best Director nod for Ava Duvernay, and no Best Actor nomination for David Oyelowo, who played King Jr. himself.
