The story of 5-year-old leukemia patient Miles Scott and his heroic day protecting Gotham as the “Batkid” is being made into a feature length film. Oscar-winner Julia Roberts is set to produce the film, having just recently reached a deal to adapt the Batkid Begins documentary that debuted at Slamdance earlier this week.
Miles Scott, aka “Batkid,” stole the hearts and eyes of the internet in November 2013 when the wanted nothing more than to be Batman for a day as part of his Make A Wish dream.
Planning for the big day went all the way back to March of the same year when Make A Wish began talks with San Fransisco’s Chief of Police and the Mayor’s Office to transform the California city into the brooding and crime-riddled city of Gotham. The initial plan was for no more than 200 or so attendees to join Miles on his special day, but thanks to social media and even President Obama himself, it exploded in popularity and became a worldwide event, with an estimated 1.84 billion social media users being impacted by it.
Julia Roberts is set to produce the film along with her Red Onn Films partners Lisa Gillian and Marisa Yeres. While it would certainly be the transformational role of a lifetime, she is unlikely to play the five-year-old Miles Scott in the film, but no names have been thrown out as to who will play the young leukemia patient – or what Roberts’ acting part in the film will be.
The Batkid Begins documentary that this film will be based off is currently airing at the Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah which runs until the 29th. It chronicles the events of Miles Scott leading up to, and the day of, his big crime-fighting debut and details “the day the Internet was nice.” Batkid Begins director Dana Nachman will executive produce the new Julia Roberts film.
