Sony Pictures Aquires Movie Rights To As-Of-Yet Unreleased Descender Comics Series

Sony Pictures recently picked up the movie rights to the Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen sci-fi, Descender. While the comic is not set to debut for another month from Image Comics, Sony Pictures is apparently already so enamored with the series that they have started the early stages of getting a film adaptation made for it.
Based on early reports, the Descender film is being produced by Josh Bratman, with Lemire and Nguyen being tagged as executive producers. Bratman has previously executive produced comedies The Sitter and The Love Guru, and he is also an executive producer on the upcoming Metal Gear Solid adaptation. Overseeing the project for Sony will be Michael De Luca and Rachel O’Connor.

“It was a competitive situation for Descender, and we are thrilled that it ended with Sony Pictures acquiring the series,” Lemire and Nguyen said in a statement. “We know that their film translation will do justice to the original comics, and we are thrilled with their belief in the franchise potential.”

When the Descender comic debuts on March 4th, it will be the first in a planned long-running monthly series about “one young robot’s struggle to stay alive in a universe where all androids have been outlawed and bounty hunters lurk on every planet.” Just looking at the series synopsis, it reads like something that would work extremely well as a big budget action movie, with some serious undertones if pulled off correctly.
It focuses on one of the outlaw androids in particular, the “incredibly life-like” TIM-21, who holds in his DNA the secret origins to the group of planet-sized robots who have mysteriously begun roaming the galaxy for the past decade. Along for the ride is also the small pet robot named Bandit and a large mining droid aptly named Driller.
No word on a release date or production start date for the film.
