Sonic Team has teased the next adventure for Sonic The Hedgehog, and it involves running fast on your Android or iOS device. Sonic Runners will be a free-to-play game supported by premium purchasable items releasing sometime this spring.
Very little is actually known about the game, thanks to a teaser trailer that is almost nothing but flashbacks to older Sonic games and a time when Sonic Boom hadn’t crushed the souls of children and child-like adults across the world. From the limited footage, name, and past mobile Sonic games, it’s safe to assume that Sonic Runners will be a 2D “endless runner” game. Similar to Robot Unicorn Attack or Jetpack Joyride, it will likely have you constantly moving across the screen and tapping it to collect rings and power ups while avoiding familiar Sonic enemies. The genre makes perfect sense for a character such as Sonic, who is supposed to be built around speed.
This isn’t the first Sonic-themed mobile game that latches on to popular genres, either. Sonic Jump hopped onto the hopping game hysteria back in 2005, requiring you tilt your phone from side to side to collect rings and power ups while avoiding familiar Sonic enemies. As well, Sonic Dash is made in the same vain as Temple Run, where you run forward and swipe from side to side to… collect rings and power ups while avoiding familiar Sonic enemies. Sonic Dash in particular has been greatly successful for SEGA and its favorite blue mascot, having racked up over 10 million downloads on Android devices alone.
Check out the trailer below, complete with ominous quotes around “RUN” towards the end, and get your finger ready for some tapping later this year.
