The LEGO Movie 2 Will Be Set In A "Weird, Dystopian Version Of Bricksburg"

|

While attending the Santa Barbara Film Festival, The LEGO Movie 2 writers/directors Christopher Miller and Phil Lord discussed some details about the upcoming animated film. Carefully dancing around spoilers during a Q&A session after their screening of The LEGO Movie, Lord let slip the setting, time period, and some hints at the character focus.
As it has been known for some time, The LEGO Movie 2 will take place only a few years after the original, following Lord Business’ (voiced by Will Ferrell) defeat at the hands of Emmett (Chris Pratt) and the rest of the LEGO citizens of Bricksburg. Things apparently haven’t gone well since then, as the follow-up film will take place in a “weird, dystopian version of Bricksburg,” as Phil Lord put it. Emmett will once again be the focus of the film, but this time his sister will be joining him for a lot of the journey as well.
Depending on how Lord and Miller want to spin it, having The LEGO Movie 2 set in a dystopian future could be a perfect lead-in to the upcoming LEGO Batman movie coming in 2017. What better setting for Batman, LEGO or otherwise, than a future filled with bad guys to punch and kick while solving mysteries? That spin-off film is being directed by Chris McKay and being written by Seth Grahame-Smith, with Will Arnett reprising his role as the voice of the LEGO caped crusader.

The LEGO Movie has been on the minds of movie fans everywhere lately due to its perceived Oscar snub. Despite being one of the best received animated films of the year – both critically and financially – it landed only one Academy Award nomination for its catchy theme song “Everything is Awesome.” All told, The LEGO Movie grossed $257.8 million domestically, and stands strong with a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Most importantly (of course) it also made the 2014 top five list of a few of our staff.
