The indigo-colored mutant known as Nightcrawler first appeared in comic book form with Giant-Size X-Men #1 all the way back in 1975. Since then, he’s been a staple in many X-Men books, has had several appearances in cartoons, and also played a major role in X-2, where he was portrayed by Alan Cumming. His ability to teleport, coupled with the dark color of his skin and ability to stick to surfaces, makes him a perfect mutant for quick assassinations, or other missions that require a level of subterfuge. How he could end up being portrayed in the film is up in the air, as he’s had several personality types during his time in the Marvel universe ranging from a jokester to a vocal Catholic.
Kodi Smith-McPhee has had a limited presence on the big screen and this will arguably be his biggest role to date. Previously he played Alexander in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Viggo Mortensen’s son in The Road, voiced Norman in ParaNorman, and also played minor roles in several other films. He’ll be joining a long list of other young actors portraying the earlier years of the X-Men, including Channing Tatum as Gambit, James McAvoy as Charles Xavier, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, and Jennifer Lawrence reprising her role as Mystique.
X-Men Apocalypse is set to release on May 27, 2016.
