As production for Neill Blomkamp’s Alien film creeps closer, we are slowly hearing about his vision for horror series. Luckily for us (and maybe unluckily for Blomkamp), he is currently on the promotional trail for his upcoming Chappie, so the media has direct access to grill him about the Alien project. His latest revelation comes while talking to Sky Movies, when the director let slip that he wants the film “to feel like it is literally the genetic sibling of Aliens. So it’s Alien, Aliens and then this movie.”
UPDATE (2/28/2015 12:45ET): Speaking with AlloCiné, director Neill Blomkamp clarified his original statements, saying he “is not trying to undo Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection.” Instead he just wants his own Alien film to feel connected to Alien and Aliens. This misunderstanding could explain why the interview was pulled so quickly off of the Sky Movies YouTube channel.

Also working with Blomkamp on Chappie and set to reprise her role as Ripley in the Alien film is Sigourney Weaver, who chimed in on her desire to “finish” Ripley’s story.
I would love to take Ripley out of orbiting around in space and give a proper finish to what was such an excellent story,
Both Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection are less-than-loved by fans of the series that began in 1979 with James Cameron’s Alien. Many fans – including Blomkamp and Weaver, apparently – felt that leaving Ellen Ripley, one of the first great female characters in action films, floating in orbit around Earth was not the best way to end her story.
While he went on to be a great director, David Fincher’s debut with Alien 3 was not a positive one. He also further alienated fans by instantly killing off favorites from Aliens, Newt and Corporal Hicks, to start off the film.
If what Blomkamp is saying goes forward as planned, this would mean that both those scenarios would effectively be wiped out. Blomkamp’s Alien would presumably start off with another crew picking up the ship that Ripley, Newt, Hicks, and Bishop all escaped in at the end of Aliens. If he does plan on bringing back Newt and Hicks it would require some recasting, as Carrie Henn – the actress who played Newt – is now 38-years-old.
