As if your amiibo addiction isn’t out of control enough as it is, Nintendo has officially confirmed that a gold Mario amiibo is coming next month. Available exclusively at 3,000 Wal-Mart stores beginning on March 30th, the shiny new figure releases on the same day as Mario Party 10.
With the addition of the long-rumored gold Mario, Nintendo’s famous plumber will now have three amiibo figures all his own. Along with original Mario ready to throw a fireball, there is also what Nintendo is calling a “Wave Mario” coming on March 20th. The new waving Mario features one of the character’s more iconic stances. It will be available exclusively in a special bundle along with Mario Party 10 for a limited time, but it does not appear to be locked in to any store.
There also does not appear to be any difference in functionality with the different versions of Mario, just more ways for you to cover every inch of your amiibo-filled shelf. If Nintendo wants to follow in the footsteps of one of their interactive figurine rivals, Disney Infinity, they could end up re-releasing all their characters in a gold or other variant form. Disney’s alternative does something similar with “crystal” figures.
Nintendo recently dropped the price of a few amiibo – Donkey Kong, Peach and Yoshi – to $9.99, down from their regular $12.99 price. This new gold-colored Mario will come with the standard $12.99 price tag. Not surprisingly, the best-selling amiibo figures are Link, Mario, Pikachu, and Kirby in the US.Source: Nintendo
