The New York Times is reporting that Leonard Nimoy of Star Trek fame has passed away at the age of 83. Nimoy’s wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, confirmed the cause of death was due to end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Nimoy was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday, but was released and died at his Bel Air home in Los Angeles.
Nimoy was a poet, photographer, singer, and songwriter, but it was his role as Spock in the original Star Trek series back in the 1960s that catapulted him into the spotlight. The series earned him three Emmy Award nominations. He appeared as Spock in eight Star Trek movies included the rebooted Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, and also appeared from time to time in various spin-offs.The Vulcan salute and the accompanying phrase “Live Long and Prosper” became synonymous with both Spock and Nimoy.
Leonard Nimoy had a busy career and is credited with 134 acting roles, directed 12 movies and TV episodes, provided voice overs for five video games and even appeared in three music videos. He published two biographies aptly titled I Am Not Spock (in 1975) and I Am Spock (in 1995), a number of photography and poetry books, and released five albums between 1967-1970.
Before his passing, Nimoy left us with one last piece of Vulcan wisdom.
