Warner Bros. and NetherRealm Studios announced today that a free-to-play version of Mortal Kombat X is coming to Android and iOS devices in April. Unlike its console and PC counterpart, which also releases in April, this mobile version will be based around “a hybrid of fighting, card collecting, multiplayer team combat, and more.”
NetherRealm Studios Creative Director and one of the biggest influences behind the Mortal Kombat series since its inception, Ed Boon, explained in a bit of detail what exactly this mobile game is as part of a press release issued by Warner Bros.

NetherRealm Studios has created Mortal Kombat X mobile experience that allows more players than ever before to play this over-the-top fighting game through their ever-present smartphones, tablets or other devices. What’s more, we’ve expanded the unique cross-connectivity feature that links the mobile and console versions of Mortal Kombat X, delivering unique rewards to all players for simply playing the mobile game.

The mobile port of Mortal Kombat X is being developed by NetherRealm Studios themselves, who also did something similar with their mobile version of Injustice: Gods Among Us. It too uses a card-based mechanic along with swiping during the actual battles to perform attacks. However, it did not feature any kind of cross-connectivity with the Injustice console version, so it will be interesting to see how that is implemented with Mortal Kombat X.
Warner Bros. also released a trailer showing the history of Mortal Kombat along with a brief glimpse at the new mobile game.
