In a move that will certainly not spell certain doom for the helpless citizens of Spingfield, the mayor of the Illinois town has given over control of the city to the nefarious terror organization, COBRA. COBRA’s leader, the Cobra Commander, graciously accepted the key to the city, and with it, the first step to world domination. Or the ability to kick off the official G.I. Joe Collector’s Convention next month.
Giving the key to the Cobra Commander is a PR stunt by the city and convention organizers to promote JoeCon, which is being held from April 9 to April 12. Springfield itself is the “mythical home of COBRA,” where, during the G.I. Joe television that aired in the ’80s, the terrorist organization set up their home base (before later destroying it and making a new one).
One of the biggest draws of the G.I. Joe Collector’s Convention is of course the collecting. Aside from the hundreds of attendees showing off their own collections, the convention is also offering eight “Registered Attendee Packages,” which feature a big list of G.I. Joe-related swag. Prices for these packages range from around $375 to $445 and each include action figures, custom name badges, and a certificate of authenticity.
Special guests at the convention will include voice actors Brian Cummings (Dr. Mindbender) and Zach Offman (Zartan), and 1980’s G.I. Joe marketing manager Kirk Bozigan.
Still no word on if the convention is actually a farce and COBRA plans to use their key to the city as a means to melt the citizens of Springfield into a fine goo and create a new base atop their puddled bodies, but we’ll keep you posted.Source: General Joes
