Jennifer Lawrence, one of the most popular actresses to breakout in the past few years, has confirmed that the upcoming X-Men Apocalypse will be her final film in the franchise. Portraying Mystique in the latest X-Men trilogy, Lawrence has become one of the key pieces of this current version of the iconic mutant series.
Along with James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Nicholas Hoult, Lawrence has been a major part of the new series set in the past, beginning with X-Men: First Class. The quartet have helped 20th Century Fox start fresh with their comic property following the ending of the original trilogy with X-Men: The Last Stand.
Despite the success of the first two films, and rumors of a stand-alone Mystique film, Lawrence is not interested in doing more than a trilogy.
“It is my last one,” Lawrence tells MTV while promoting her latest film Serena with co-star Bradley Cooper. “Yes.”
While fans of the franchise may be disappointed that Lawrence won’t be suiting up as the mysterious shape-shifter after the release of Apocalypse on May 27, 2016, fans of the Hunger Games star won’t be at a loss. She has multiple film projects already lined up that perhaps factored into her decision not to return as Mystique.
This news follows the announcement from her co-star, Nicholas Hoult could be finished with the series as well, following next year’s blockbuster. Hoult indicated that his contract is up after this next film, but was open to continue playing Hank McCoy, also known as Beast.
There’s no telling whether these departures are strictly contractual, or if they fit into the creative direction that will follow what is sure to be a monumental even in the X-Men cinematic universe. While Lawrence and Hoult may be on their way out, the recent additions to the cast won’t likely lead to a shortage of options.
