Last October, Showtime announced that David Lynch would be returning for a revival of the surreal and just downright weird Twin Peaks. Some troubling news happened over the weekend for Twin Peaks fans, however: while the show might still happen, it won’t involve the legendary David Lynch.
In a series of tweets last night, Lynch explained that he is leaving the revival due to budgetary reasons, and he has already begun calling actors on the show to inform them that he will not be the director, should the series still move forward.
After 1 year and 4 months of negotiations, I left because not enough money was offered to do the script the way I felt it needed to be done.

In a statement to Variety, Showtime seems to think it’s still possible that Lynch could return to the series along with Mark Frost, noting that they still had hopes about Lynch’s contract. Unless the previous tweets from Lynch are some extremely strong-handed negotiating tactic, it looks like Showtime may just be dreaming like the rest of us.
We were saddened to read David Lynch’s statement today since we believed we were working towards solutions with David and his reps on the few remaining deal points. Showtime also loves the world of ‘Twin Peaks’ and we continue to hold out hope that we can bring it back in all its glory with both of its extraordinary creators, David Lynch and Mark Frost, at its helm.
The original series, which ran for two seasons in 1990-1991, centered on a murder in the small town of Twin Peaks, Washington. A movie followed shortly after in 1992 titled Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, but a fully-fledged sequel to the original series never happened.
