Big Star Wars news is going to be flying fast and loose today with Star Wars Celebration kicking off, and one of the more exciting announcements for comic book readers is the fact that Marvel Unlimited is now home to more than 500 past Star Wars comics. This of course includes the Marvel-published comics that began all the way back in the ’70s, but it also includes the issues published while Star Wars’ comic book rights belonged to Dark Horse Comics – just now with the Marvel branding.
The 500 comics are part of “Star Wars Legends,” or what was formally the Star Wars Extended Universe. The Extended Universe, as you may recall, was deemed no longer canon shortly after Disney bought the rights to Star Wars back in 2012. Outside of the six main films, and a select number of other works including the Star Wars: The Clone Wars spinoff cartoon, nothing else is part of the official Star Wars history going forward with the new films and comic books series.
With Marvel’s recent re-acquisition of the Star Wars comic rights they have begun churning out a pleasing number of Star Wars comics on their own including Star Wars, Darth Vader, Princess Leia, and an origin series for Star Wars Rebels star Kanan titled Kanan: The Last Padawan. As with all comics on Marvel Unlimited, these newer Star Wars comics will appear six months after they are sold in physical form.
To celebrate the new additions, Marvel Unlimited is running a special offer for the first month of the service free for newcomers using, appropriately enough, “STARWARS” at checkout. Access to all of Marvel’s other 15,000 back issues on Marvel Unlimited normally runs around $10/month. The special offer is valid starting yesterday and running until March 5 at 11:59 PM EDT.
It’s also worth noting as previously mentioned, if you’re hoping to use Unlimited to keep up-to-date on currently-running comics, that new issues are added six months after they are printed – meaning you will be perpetually six months behind the curve. If this doesn’t matter, or if you only want to read some great older comics, it’s hard to beat the price point for all the reading material you acquire with it.
