Spider-Man Actor Shortlist Partially Revealed

|

When Sony Pictures and Marvel announced that Andrew Garfield would not be returning for future plans involving Spider-Man, it left the role completely up in the air. Some speculated that the story would be about Miles Morales, not another Peter Parker story, making the playing field even wider. But according to a report from TheWrap, Sony Pictures and Marvel have already narrowed down the Spider-Man actor role to a select group of up-and-coming young stars.

It’s important to note that even TheWrap states this may not be the entire shortlist, but this seems to be the most likely group of up-and-coming actor candidates that they have consistently heard from sources.

Nat Wolff

Marvel couldn’t pick a more aimed-at-teenage girls actor than Nat Wolff. Having already starred in one YA novel-to-film adaptation, The Fault in Our Stars, Wolff is set to star in another later this year, Paper Towns. The 20-year-old actor is the only candidate listed that isn’t a teenager, but he can easily pass as one, as he’s done in previous films. Curiously enough, it was another Fault in Our Stars actor, Ansel Elgort, who many thought might land the role as Peter Parker.

Asa Butterfield

Asa Butterfield is most known for his titular role in Hugo when he was only 13-years-old. He also starred in Ender’s Game alongside Harrison Ford in 2013. Now 18, the actor would fit perfectly age-wise if Marvel is going for the high school Spider-Man.

Tom Holland

Spider-Man-Actor-Tom-Holland

Arguably one of the lesser-known of the already lesser-known actors on this list, Tom Holland did have a voice role in 2013’s Locke, and starred for 6 episodes in the TV mini-series Wolf Hall. Of all five candidates, Holland is easily the youngest-looking star, despite also being 18-years-old.

Timothee Chalamet

Spider-Man-Actor-Timothee-Chalamat

Timothee Chalamet’s biggest role to date was as the 15-year-old version of Tom in Interstellar. Outside of that, he also starred in 8 episodes of Homeland as Finn Walden. I think it’s safe to say he has the Peter Parker “look” more than the others.

Liam James

Spider-Man-Actor-Liam-James

Arguably not his fault given how young he was in the roles, but Liam James has been in some pretty bad movies. His debut came in 2007 with Good Luck Chuck, followed by Fred Claus, Aliens vs Predator: Requiem, and finally 2012. He’s fared much better in TV roles where he’s been in Fringe, Psych, and The Killing.

While it looks like the official Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man will indeed be Peter Parker, that does not mean it will be another origin story. Instead, it will be about a teenage high school student already established and swinging around New York City in a home made Spidey suit. He is first set to appear in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. While the rest of shooting is expected it begin soon, Peter Parker will likely not be cast until closer to June when he is actually needed on set.
