Avengers: Age of Ultron Can’t Quite Beat Record, Reaches $191.3 Million

Numbers are rolling in for the opening weekend of Avengers: Age of Ultron in the U.S. and it looks like Ultron didn’t quite get all the strings off with the sequel only netting an estimated $191.3 million domestically, according to Walt Disney Pictures. Even with all the hype and 13 films backing it in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the sequel to the smash hit The Avengers falls short of its predecessor which currently holds the record for highest opening weekend record at a modest $207.4 million.

Avengers: Age of Ultron did, however, take the number 1 spot in movie weekend market share, where the number 1 movie earned 50% or more of the top 12 grossing movies. Ultron scored 85.3% of the top 12 movies where the original flavor holds the number 3 spot at 83.1% of the market share for its opening weekend. That’s a fairly impressive number considering Ultron had more than just the Avengers to fight against in the US over the weekend with the Mayweather-Pacquiao title fight, NHL playoffs, NBA playoffs, the Kentucky Derby, and of course the Royal Baby Watch for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s new little bundle of joy all competing for the spotlight over the weekend.

According to the same source, Ultron has been doing fairly well internationally, scooping up over $439 million dollars since having been released a week ahead of the US. Ultron netted $201 million internationally on its opening weekend abroad, breaking U.K. box office records for 2015 and already shaping up to be another gigantic cash robot cow for Marvel, handily making back its $250 million production budget already in just box office tickets, one can only imagine the astronomical figures from continued movie tickets, the DVD releases, and merchandising.
