After months of alpha testing, the new DRM-free online gaming platform GOG Galaxy has entered the open beta test phase and is ready for all gamers to try out. So what exactly is GOG Galaxy?
GOG GALAXY is a fully optional client to install, play and update your games. It also offers online multiplayer, achievements, chat, game-time tracking and more – but it’s up to you which features you want to use.
Many gamers are familiar with GOG.com, most notably for their deeply discounted classic games. GOG Galaxy is completely optional unlike some other online gaming platforms and you’ll still be able to purchase and install games from GOG.com without having to install or use GOG Galaxy.
You may want to take a look at GOG Galaxy however as it offers one-click installation, auto-updates, achievements, chat, and more. And if a patch breaks your game, GOG Galaxy gives you the option to rollback to a previous working version of the game. With GOG Galaxy, gamers can even download a DRM-free standalone copy of games they purchase, allowing them to save and store a full copy locally.
Recently GOG has been working towards offering newer and AAA titles and GOG Galaxy will help them achieve that goal.
“With GOG Galaxy, we can start bringing new, big games to GOG.com,” says Piotr Karwowski, VP of online technologies. “The first major release will be The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which will offer automatic updates, achievements and stats. We’re getting ready to release and fully support even more AAA titles in the future.”
Gamers that install and use GOG Galaxy will also find matchmaking and online play features, game-time tracking & stats, crossplay between GOG and Steam purchased games, and other features such as game overlays coming soon. While the service is in open beta, you’ll still have to request an invite and should receive your invitation in a couple days.
