It looks like 343 Industries lived up to their promise to deliver Halo 3: ODST to owners of Halo: The Master Chief Collection by the end of May. 343 Industries indicated they would be releasing the installment partly to appease gamers after Halo: MCC suffered from many online multiplayer bugs in the months after launch.
The Halo 3: ODST campaign will be free to eligible consumers who logged in to their Xbox Live account and played Halo: The Master Chief Collection between Nov. 11, 2014 and Dec. 19, 2014. The Halo 3: ODST campaign will also be available as downloadable content for Halo: The Master Chief Collection through the Xbox Store for $4.99.
Halo 3: ODST has been remastered and runs at 1080p/60fps on the Xbox One, and as mentioned in the quote above is available for free to anyone who played the game between November 11, 2014 and December 19, 2014. Codes are currently being sent out to those gamers who qualify. Unfortunately this means that if you were one of those who happened to get Halo: The Master Chief Collection for Christmas (as I did) or picked it up on Boxing Day, you’ll have to shell out $4.99USD for Halo 3: ODST. When questioned about the cutoff date, Xbox responded with a pretty generic “sorry, you’re SOL” response, and then locked the post preventing further communication on the issue.
In order to qualify for this offer, you would have needed to play Halo the Master Chief Collection online between Nov.11,2014 and Dec.19, 2014. Considering the online issues continued after December 19, 2014 – the cancellation of ESL’s recent Halo Championship Tournament due to connectivity issues is a prime example, I’m sure many gamers feel that the Halo 3: ODST addon should be included for anyone who has purchased Halo: The Master Chief Collection – regardless of when. Don’t get me wrong, it’s only $5 but when you offer it to a set of gamers who bought it before Christmas, and continue to have issues after the cutoff date yet don’t extend the offer to those who received it or bought it while issues still persisted seems, then I think there’s a customer service issue there. And I’m not the only one if some of the comments on Major Nelson’s post regarding Halo 3: ODST are any indication.
Also announced was the release of the “Remnant” multiplayer map for Halo 2: Anniversary and will be available for free to anyone who owns Halo: The Master Chief Collection.
