LEGO Worlds – LEGO’s Version of Minecraft

Minecraft has most easily been described as virtual LEGOs where you can build anything you can think of out of the various different colored blocks in the game.  Finally LEGO has decided that they need their own version of this and you can play it now on your PC to try it out.  LEGO Worlds is a new sandbox game from LEGO that lets you explore their randomly generated worlds and create whatever your heart desires.

LEGO Worlds is a galaxy of procedurally-generated Worlds made entirely of LEGO bricks which you can freely manipulate and dynamically populate with LEGO models. Explore each World and unlock new discoveries: from cowboys and giraffes to vampires and polar bears, to steamrollers, race cars, and colossal digging machines! Use the multi-tool to shape environments and alter any World to your liking: raise the terrain to create vast mountain ranges, or enter the Brick-by-Brick editor to build anything you can imagine. Save your creations to build with them again. LEGO Worlds enables you to populate your Worlds with many weird and wonderful characters, creatures, models, and driveable vehicles, and then play out your own unique adventures. Probably not worth upsetting the Skeletons though…

LEGO Worlds is still a work in progress and currently in beta, or early access as they’re calling it.  If you still haven’t got your building fix from Minecraft or just want to build with some LEGOs you can head over to Steam and pick up the early access game at a reduced price of only $14.99.  The game is going to be early access through the remainder of 2015 and should be officially released next year sometime.  The developers have this to say about the early access program:

LEGO Worlds will be a fully open-world, creativity-driven game so we want to ensure that we provide it with the utmost care and attention as we expand on our ideas. So much of this game will be about building and sharing and by sharing our plans with the community, we hope to incorporate their feedback and build an experience together that fans of LEGO and this genre of video games can enjoy.

A few of the things setting this apart from Minecraft it is that there will be different vehicles that you can operate, from drilling vehicles to aircraft, as well as a variety of different animals that you can ride ranging from ostriches or horses to dragons. You can make easy changes to the terrain with their multi-tool or you can edit the environment using the brick-by-brick mode if you’d like.  LEGO Worlds also has more of a variety of building options instead of your standard block that you have in Minecraft which will allow you to be able to build things a bit more rounded and smoother looking than you could ever dream of doing in Minecraft.

One downfall with the early access version is that it is lacking any sort of multiplayer.  It is one of the items that the developers say they are going to have with the final version.  A few of the other things that they are planning on adding to the game down the road are cut/copy/paste functionality, more vehicles, more weapons, more characters, more creatures, and underwater gameplay.  Right now it looks like LEGO Worlds will only be available on PC.  Maybe closer to the final release we will learn if it will be coming out on any consoles as well.

What do you think of LEGO’s new game; have you had enough building in Minecraft or are you ready to start making more worlds out of LEGO?  Let us know in the comments, on Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.
