There’s no denying the impact video games have had on society over the last 4 decades. While other forms of entertainment have their “Halls of Fame”, the first six games ever were inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame located at The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester N.Y.
The six inductees were picked from a list of 15 games which included:
- Angry Birds
- DOOM
- FIFA
- The Legend of Zelda
- Minecraft
- The Oregon Trail
- Pac-Man
- Pokémon
- Pong
- The Sims
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Space Invaders
- Super Mario Bros.
- Tetris
- World of Warcraft
Not a bad list that encompasses a few old classics and some newer classics which have all in some way shaped genres or the video game industry itself. Out of the list of nominees, only six were inducted and those were Pong, Pac-Man, Tetris, Super Mario Bros., DOOM, and World of Warcraft.
While there are many other games that could have been chosen from, I think the six inductees were very good choices and each defined video games as we know it today. Pong arguably launched the video game industry while Pac-Man really propelled the popularity of video gaming forward. There’s no arguing that Tetris and Super Mario Bros. are video game classics,DOOM paved the way for first person shooters, and World of Warcraft really shaped the MMORPG genre picking up honors as the largest and best-selling MMORPG along the way.
