Netflix has just announced that it will be teaming up with Plan B Entertainment, a company headed by Brad Pitt and co-presidents Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, to produce a satirical comedy called War Machine.
Two things we should note before we continue, no this isn’t a Marvel spin-off for the Don Cheadle War Machine character, and the image above comes from Brad Pitt’s role in the movie Fury.
The movie will be a Netflix original film from David Michôd and will star Brad Pitt in the leading role. It will also be an exclusive available to Netflix users around the globe and available in select theaters next year. It’s based on the best-selling book, The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan by the late Michael Hastings.
The movie centers around a four-star, “rock star” general who is vaulted into command of the American war in Afghanistan thanks to his lethal reputation and impeccable track record. He’s determined to win an impossible war, once and for all, with a radical new approach. The general, his staff and press advisers race across the world in an attempt to delicately navigate international alliances and troop requests in conjunction with navigating Washington politics, the media and the day-to-day war management.
Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos was pretty excited for the joint venture.
War Machine is a rip-roaring, behind-the-facade tale of modern war decision-makers, from the corridors of power to the distant regions of America’s ambitions. Brad and David are a perfect team to make this timely, compelling and entertaining film.
Pitt echoed the excitement.
We are so excited to be a part of the inspiring commitment by Netflix to produce cutting-edge content and to deliver it to a global audience.
I’m humbled to be making a big, bold movie about the whole sprawling, complex, cumbersome and crazy machinery of modern war and the many lives it touches.
Principal photography is scheduled to start in August with a global debut next year.
