If you’ve been playing The Witcher 3, you should have run into at least one game of Gwent so far. With everything going on from the main missions to side missions, while the opportunity to play Gwent at various establishments and against different merchants keeps presenting itself you may just be ignoring what is actually a fun little side game within The Witcher 3.
For those not familiar, Gwent is a collectible card game that you can play in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. You can choose from four different factions, each having their own deck of cards. As Geralt, you play against NPCs in a best of 3 round format. While you start off with a starter deck, you can purchase cards from merchants or even win them from certain NPCs by beating them. If you wish, there’s even a high-stakes tournament in Novigrad that you can partake in once you’ve mastered the game.
At first Gwent was one of those options that I’d disregard, but after playing a few hands have come to enjoy it and try to get in at least a couple games during each session. Rafał Jaki and Damien Monnier from CD Projekt RED have put together an overview and tutorial for Gwent. If you’ve been skipping playing, or don’t quite understand the game, check out the video below and you just might find yourself playing more Gwent than you bargained!
