Google Taking On Twitch With YouTube Gaming

After failing in its bid to purchase Twitch last year, it seems that Google has turned its sights on creating their own streaming gameplay service and have announced YouTube Gaming.

In a blog post today, YouTube announced that a brand new website and app will be launched this summer which focuses specifically on gaming, from let’s plays to walkthroughs to speedruns and live streams and more. The new service is just that, it’s not an addition to YouTube but features a fresh new look and focus on gaming. Over 25,000 games will have their own page where users can find related videos and live streams for that title. Game publishers and YouTube creators will also be able to set up their own channels.

Subscribers will be able to add games to their collection for quick access, and subscribing to a channel will send you a notification when that channel starts a live stream. Live streams will also be prominently featured on the main page of YouTube Gaming.

YouTube Gaming will initially be available in the U.S. and the U.K., hopefully with support for other countries (hint hint Canada) to follow suit shortly afterwards. It will be interesting to see what systems this supports as Twitch has apps for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 that allow streaming from those platforms, if YouTube Gaming is going to succeed it will need to support more than just PC gaming.

Twitch was quick to welcome the competition.

You can sign up on the YouTube Gaming website to be notified of when the service goes live. What do you think about Google’s move to enter the streaming gameplay arena? Let us know in the comments below, or on Google+, Twitter, or Facebook.
