Baldur’s Gate Gets Its First Sequel in Over a Decade

It’s been a long time coming. A gaming series that has boasted hundreds upon hundreds of original gameplay, not to mention hundreds more with the enhanced edition, the Baldur’s Gate series will get even more hours of game play as Canadian developer Beamdog just announced a new expansion titled Siege of Dragonspear.

Taking place between Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate II, gamers of the original and enhanced editions will finally see what transpired between the first game and its sequel. Even with your brother Sarevok dead, peace eludes the citizens of the Sword Coast as a crusade marches south, seizing supplies, forcing citizens into military service and disrupting trade along the Sword Coast. Led by someone only known as the Shining Lady, this charismatic leader remains a mystery.

Siege of Dragonspear is an expansion to the original Baldur’s Gate so you’ll at least need that to gain 25-hours more of game-play. As if that weren’t enough, the game also adds four new characters, along with the originals we’ve all come to know and love. But wait! There’s more! The expansion adds a whole new class. Along with new items and gear, you’ll be able to play a spirit-calling shaman.

Beamdog is boasting other features like cross-platform multiplayer up to six (on supported platforms) and something the developer calls story mode. As the developer says, “A difficulty setting to allow players to experience all of the story with none of the Game Over screens.”

There are many a Baldur’s Gate player from novice to seasoned who can attest to the difficult nature of the game early on, if you’re not paying attention. Story mode should make some of those early frustrations a thing of the past.

There’s no release date for the game, the game trailer (below) says the game is coming soon. So, if you haven’t played through at least the original enhanced edition, you may want to get on that. Once you’re done with the original, you’ll be able to import your character straight into the new expansion, and once that’s done, right into Baldur’s Gate II.
