Matt Damon Still Alone In New Images From The Martian

It may not be obvious at first, but Ridley Scott and Elon Musk have something important in common – clearly, both are obsessed with space. From Alien to Blade Runner to Prometheus, the British director has revealed a fascination for navigating the Universe and colonizing planets. But while Musk figures out how to make that actually possible, Scott is just going to use movie magic to shoot off another group of unsuspecting recruits to the other side of the stratosphere in The Martian.

These newly released images give us a peek at the sound stage assembled in Budapest to recreate the Martian landscape. In the movie, Matt Damon’s character Mark Watney is stranded on Mars after a storm forces the rest of the crew to take off without him. What follows is best summarized as a cross between MacGyver and an episode of Man vs. Wild on Mars.

Matt Damon’s participation in the project has meant the rest of the (inter)stellar cast has flown under the radar. Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jessica Chastain, Sean Bean, Michael Pena, Kate Mara, Donald Glover, and Kristen Wiig all play either Watney’s crewmates or NASA’s employees on the ground.

While The Martian has drawn comparisons to movies like Cast Away and I am Legend, it’s unlikely we see Damon on screen for prolonged periods. In the book the action constantly shifts between Watney, the crew aboard the spaceship “Hermes”, and the NASA team.

Directed by Ridley Scott, who is also a producer on the film, The Martian is based on the eponymous book by Andy Weir. Weir made a name for himself with his short story The Egg, which has been translated into thirty-one languages. The Martian reaches theaters in the USA October 2. It will also make a stop at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival.
