Is Halo 5: Guardians The End Of An Era In Local Co-Op?

After holding out for almost fifteen years, the time has come. The new Halo game will not be playable with splitscreen.

Halo 5: Guardians is the first Halo title to ever not feature local splitscreen multiplayer. All other games in the series have multiplayer versus capabilities, as well as cooperative campaigns. Another blow to fans of multiplayer games: the new Halo will have no native LAN play either. Meaning that the only way to play the game with another person is for both of you to have separate games, on separate consoles.

This news, first announced in July of this year, hits particularly hard for many dedicated fans of the franchise, myself included. As more and more shooter games went the way of singleplayer-only, Halo had been the one to defy that trend.

With so many gamers being disappointed by this news, 343 Industries has also announced that it is possile splitscreen capabilities will be added to the game sometime after its release on October 27 of this year. However, that’s not a guarantee of multiplayer so much as a theoretical multiplayer, so I wouldn’t count on it. The original reason behind the dropping of splitscreen was to deliver the best game visually, which I don’t see changing after the game is released.

In other dissappointing Halo news, the game is only coming out on the Xbox One. Not a big surprise, but still sad for those of us who are still rocking the 360 technology. However, there may be worse news.

Rumor around the internet is that online play for Halo 5: Guardians is only available to Xbox Live Gold members.

Now, while most gamers I know have shelled out the $60 for the Gold membership, which comes with two free games every month, there are players out there who choose to use the regular, free Xbox Live membership. And they won’t be able to use the online features of Halo’s latest game. Buying the game when it comes out will give owners a free 14 day trial of Gold to use the online features, but once that’s gone, they will have to buy a Gold membership in order to continue using it.

What do you think of the new way to play Halo? What are your thoughts on shooter games being almost exclusively singleplayer now? Let us know in the comments below
