Perhaps one of the scariest movies I watched as a kid was Nightmare on Elm Street. There’s no denying that Wes Craven was one of the few masters of horror in the movie industry. Craven, also known for the Scream movies, has passed away from brain cancer at the age of 76 in his Los Angeles home.
Wes Craven directed his first feature film, The Last House on the Left, in 1972. He would direct 5 more movies before introducing the world to Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street films. The popular Scream trilogy featuring Ghostface was credited with revitalizing the horror genre in the late 90s by mixing slasher horror with humour. Other films Wes Craven was involved in of note include Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, The Hills Have Eyes, The Serpent and the Rainbow, The People Under the Stairs, Vampire in Brooklyn, Cursed, Red Eye, and My Soul to Take.
The director was working on a number of television projects at the time of his death, including a TV adaptation of The People Under the Stairs for Syfy, Disciples for Universal Cable Productions, We Are All Completely Fine with Syfy and UCP, as well as Sleepers for Federation Entertainment. He was also listed as an executive producer of a new Scream series for MTV.
Our thoughts and condolences go out to his wife and family, the industry will surely miss him and his talented writing and directing.
