Apparently, film critics and movie goers alike were not among Zac Efron’s friends this weekend, as his DJ inspired drama debuts to a historically low weekend fate. In fact, We Are Your Friends had the third lowest opening weekend in box office history, only raking in $1.8 million worldwide.
As Straight Outta Compton, another music based drama continues to dominate the movie theaters for the third week in a row, Efron’s EDM-style film flopped legendarily. Despite a wide 2,333 theater release, the film performed worse than the Major League movie without Charlie Sheen and the generally forgotten and creatively titled college flick starring Drake Bell, College.
We Are Your Friends received generally mediocre reviews from critics, receiving a score of 43 percent from Rotten Tomatoes and a 2/5 from Screen Rant, who praise the cast and directing of Max Joseph, but say it isn’t enough to save the poorly written screenplay.
While the film wasn’t a big budget blockbuster, it certainly must be disappointing for Efron and company to have only outperformed Delgo and Oogieloves In The BIG Balloon Adventure. We Are Your Friends finished 13th for the final weekend of an overall dismal month for movie sales, with only the aforementioned N.W.A. biopic and the notorious Fantastic Four clearing $14 million for an opening weekend.
On a lighter note, rounding out the top three for the weekend are War Room and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.
