In an attempt to add visibility to it’s digital movie service, Disney has joined forces with Amazon and Microsoft to make the app accessible throughout more platforms. With the DVD business continuing it’s steady slide out of relevance, The Disney Movies Anywhere service was launched in February 2014 and contains over 450 films in its collection.
While a Disney Video-on-Demand cloud service seems like it would be a popular option for any movie fan, it was introduced as an app on iTunes that would organize previously bought films and offer more films through its services. It was then expanded to Google Play, Chromecast, and VUDU.
The new partnership allows Disney Movies Anywhere to have apps on Amazon Fire TV and Xbox 360 immediately, as well as Roku and Android TV starting next week. To anyone with an account, this means that any movie you’ve purchases through the cloud will be viewable through any of those devices and services.
The move comes at an opportune time for the company, as it will soon release a slew of popular recent films available for purchase, including Big Hero 6, Tomorrowland, and Marvel’s blockbuster Avengers: Age of Ultron. This will join an already impressive list of options that guarantees to find something that to push anyone’s inner nostalgia button.
Also, the move comes into effect before another major deal that Disney made kicks in, as it will team with Netflix beginning in 2016. The deal gives Netflix the exclusive rights to stream Disney films earlier than any other service.
As a part of the promotion, Disney is offering a free copy of Monsters, Inc for new members who link their accounts to Amazon, Microsoft or through any other existing partnership.
