Twenty years after the original hit theaters, Kevin Smith has announced the date and location that he will begin production on the sequel to cult classic Mallrats. The sequel, titled MallBrats, will begin filming in January next year at Exton Square Mall in Exton, PA.
Smith made the announcement via his social media accounts that production on part two of his 1995 film will get underway at the beginning of next year. Representatives for PREIT, the property management company that owns Exton Square Mall, confirmed the location as well, stating that the company is “excited for the opportunity,” and “thrilled at the prospect” of hosting Smith and company and to create jobs for the area.

Mallrats was Smith’s sophomore directorial effort, following the low-budget cult classic Clerks, which was released one year prior in 1994. While his second offering was gifted with a larger budget and a cast with higher name recognition, the film was not well received upon its release by critics or audiences. However, it has grown to reach a similar cult following as Smith’s first film as time went on.
When the idea for the film was initially announced earlier this year, it was also confirmed that all of the original cast of Mallrats would be returning, including Jason Mewes and Smith reprising their roles as Jay and Silent Bob, Jason Lee returning as Brodie, and Stan Lee continuing to just be Stan Lee.
The film was originally slated to begin filming late in 2015 at the Granite Run Mall in Philadelphia, but due to scheduling conflicts and the impending closure of the mall, the date and location was changed to Exton, PA in early 2016.
