The HBO fantasy hit Game of Thrones, based on George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series of novels, finally received the recognition many felt it deserved after taking home a whopping 12 Emmy awards last night. It’s been a long time coming as the show was constantly beat out by others for the Best Drama spot, and this year it managed to snag not only that award, but also Outstanding Supporting Actor for Peter Dinklage’s role as Tyrion Lannister, Writing by David Benioff and Dan Weiss, and Direction by David Nutter.
The only major award won by Game of Thrones previously was for Outstanding Supporting Actor back in 2011, also won by Dinklage. The show has also received some backlash over the years as favourite characters are killed off, and the show continues testing the boundaries by including depictions of rape and people being burned alive in some of its scenes.
“We knew that there would be some resistance at first to a show set in this genre … we knew it would take a while,” Benioff said. “But we’d hoped if we did our jobs and if we were fortunate enough to be blessed with the cast and crew that we were blessed with … and if we got lucky, that we’d get there eventually.”
The complete list of awards the show won included 8 from the Creative Arts Emmys, and included:

- Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series (David Benioff and Dan Weiss, “Mother’s Mercy”)
- Outstanding Direction in a Drama Series (David Nutter, “Mother’s Mercy”)
- Outstanding Make-Up for a Single-Camera Series (Non-Prosthetic)
- Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Drama Series
- Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Contemporary or Fantasy Program (One Hour or More) (“High Sparrow,” “Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken” “Hardhome”)
- Outstanding Sound Editing for a Series (“Hardhome”)
- Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Scripted Series (“Hardhome”)
- Outstanding Special Visual Effects (“The Dance of Dragons”)
- Outstanding Stunt Coordination for a Drama Series
- Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series
All told, HBO took home 43 Emmys for its shows which was a record for the network as well.
