Maze Runner Sequel Scorches The Box Office

|

Almost one year to the day after the release of the first movie in the series, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials tops the Box Office, hauling in $30.3 million domestically and $108.3 million worldwide. Wes Ball’s adaptation of James Dashner’s novel continues the recent trend of instant profitability for film versions of books aimed towards young adults, like Twilight and The Hunger Games.

While it falls just short of the opening box office total of its predecessor, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials debuted as the 9th highest September debut of all time, less than $5,000 behind Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs. The film was released last week overseas, opening second on the international box office behind Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.

The Maze Runner Sequel has performed well in spite of tepid reviews from various critics. The film has 50% on Rotten Tomatoes and 43 on Metacritic. While the first film was praised by for it’s atmosphere, character development and well-crafted story, which is occasionally lacking in adaptations of YA novels, Scorch Trials lacks these elements, as multiple reviewers are quick to point out in their critiques.

Coming in at number two in this weekend’s box office is the debut of Johnny Depp’s latest film Black Mass, co-starring Joel Edgerton, Kevin Bacon and the soon-to-be Doctor Strange Benedict Cumberbatch. The Scott Cooper directed film grossed $23.4 million, following a strong performance at the Venice International Film Festival.

Black Mass has been well received by critics, scoring 76% on Rotten Tomatoes and 68 on Metacritic. Depp has received praise for his performance as Irish Mob boss Whitey Bugler, saying he captures the essence of what was an intimidating, dark and mysterious figure.

Rounding out the top five for this weekend is M. Night Shyamalan’s horror comedy The Visit, David Rosenthal’s The Perfect Guy, and the debut of Everest starring Josh Brolin and Jake Gyllenhaal.
