Stephen King’s The Mist is set to receive the television treatment. Dimension Television, the company behind MTV’s successful Scream series is taking the helm in bringing King’s 1980 horror novella to the small screen.
The original story centered around a group of small town residents trapped inside a small town Maine grocery store by a seemingly innocuous mist that turns into a malevolent shroud of horror-doom that conceals spooky things that H.P. Lovecraft would have been proud of. When the residents weren’t being nommed by the creatures of nightmare they confront an entirely different breed of monster in the form of psychological trauma.
The Mist was previously adapted into a 2007 film by Frank Darabont of The Walking Dead fame which kept true to the original story with the exception of one of the best twist endings ever.
Bob Weinstein, co-chairman of The Weinstein Company and Dimension Films, has said the following regarding the project:
The terror and drama in Stephen King’s novella are so vast that we felt serialized television is the best place to explore them in greater depth. With this show, Christian has created a fascinating band of characters and a story with infinite scares.
The heads behind the show have said that its canon will contain a mix of King’s original story as well as elements of the film while leaving plenty of room for the writers to explore.
Stephen King, one of the most successful horror writers and novelists of all time, is no stranger to film and TV as many of his works have been successfully adapted including The Shining, It, Stand By Me, Pet Sematary, Cujo, Misery, The Green Mile, and Carrie. Stephen King has published 54 novels with over 350 million copies sold.
