The scene at the very end of Guardians of the Galaxy where Baby Groot was dancing was met with a lot of fanfare. People loved Baby Groot so much, that a number of companies have worked hard on making the CGI dancing twig into a toy anyone can pick up. During that scene, we see Baby Groot freeze when Drax looks up from sharpening his blade. I, myself was unsure as to why the cute dancing twig would stop, but according to director James Gunn, there’s a reason why.
In a recent interview on Doug Loves Movies, the director explained why Baby Groot stopped dancing:
“There was actually a scene that we cut from the movie where big Groot was dancing to ‘Livin’ Thing’ by ELO., and it wasn’t such an elaborate dance. It was more that he was just moving up and down like this, and Drax was dismissive and gave him this look like he was a loser when he did that.”
I guess this explains why Drax kept eyeing Groot something fierce. Gunn even joked what Drax would do with dancing if he were mayor of a town.
“Dancing is ludicrous to Drax. I don’t think he understands it. If Drax owned a town, if he was a mayor, the first law would be no dancing. But yeah, so at the end of the movie, little baby Groot didn’t want to get caught dancing, because he would kill him.”
I don’t know about you, but I could stomach yet another remake of the Kevin Bacon classic, Footloose starring the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy. Drax, the preacher who swayed a town to ban dancing within town limits; Starlord – the rebellious city kid who just wants to dance. Maybe this is the sequel James Gunn should be writing instead.
